Yeah, as I work in a university, I thought exactly the same thing.

But then I realised we're talking about Harvard and Walter had probably set up some kind of endowment for the psychochemistry faculty or something.

In reading or watching fantasy, belief is a restricted good, which is why people have problems with the endless stew and the tireless maintenance-free horses, in a book with magic in it. A true realist would complain about the magic, but probably wouldn't be reading the fantasy in the first place.

One of the reasons I love How I Met Your Mother is that Lilly and Marshall have a proper relationship rather than the usual TV fodder where couples have endless pointless conflict because they never communicate about anything.
