Poor people will eventually steal if they feel there is no way out for them.

Make them more poor and they will just still more.

So, healthy people live longer than unheathy ones - hardly earth-shattering!

Five months in jail, for shorts? Sounds like the police raided the flat and CPS just decided to get the other occupant for whatever they could. Shorts? REALLY?

So, we're jailing non-violent cash-strapped mums as secondary criminals but handing out community service to violent offenders as primary criminals.

Rule of Law my arse.

Is the amazing jailhouse reveal actually all that surprising? Having seen several friends go back into abusive relationships, it's generally because of emotional blackmail so it seems logical that would follow through to what would best change their minds about criminal proceedings too... Or was I just not following the normal thinking process?

Ah, I guess that me thinking differently to Law Enforcement isn't all that surprising. They're often trained to deal with violence and criminal behaviour, not psychology and real people emotional messiness I fear.

one of the most tragic relationships I ever encountered [you're aware of it] involved an amazingly intelligent woman putting up with absurd amounts of grief because, effectively, she refused to believe that it would never get any better.

once out of the relationship, the recognition of what she'd effectively forced herself to endure was utterly heartbreaking.

It heartens me that the police had some complaints, at least.

Re: Personal Responsibility: Here in the U.S., at least, I think that "handicap-accessible" loos are commonly viewed as open to everyone, with handicapped people given priority. I think of myself as being reasonably considerate, and don't hesitate to use them. Absent Pressing Necessity (which, at age 82, sometimes applies) I'd wave a wheelchare-bound person ahead of me, of course, and my first choice would be to use an ordinary stall.

Mind you, I cannot understand the psychology of "I'm too Important to press the 'Flush' lever". And I'm not beyond suggesting that I might use some of the contents of that WC to do some Wiccan Working.
