When I see an embedded youtube video it seems to always default to a resolution of 360p. If I full-screen it it automatically switches to 480p.

The net result is that if I wait for the whole video to download and _then_ hit the "Full Screen" option it starts downloading it all over again.

Who on earth thinks this is a good idea?

I'm not sure what other behaviour YouTube could implement short of somehow learning your personal practices. Running it at lower-res fullscreen would be suboptimal.

I guess if the majority of views are in smaller format they must save themselves (and their users) a lot of bandwidth and rendering resources. On my netbook the fullscreen mode is noticeably more sluggish.
