The Oxford comma; it just makes sense.

I'm a fan of the Oxford comma, but it's no panacea. The presence of an Oxford comma can just as easily introduce that sort of ambiguity:

With Oxford comma:
I'd like to thank my mother, Maggie Thatcher, and the Pope.

Without Oxford comma:
I'd like to thank my mother, Maggie Thatcher and the Pope.

I'm in favour of selective application.

I have to say that in both of those cases I'd be unclear as to whether Maggie Thatcher was your mother.

I think that I'd favour brackets for clarity.
