Now that I've got a Kindle, I'm a bit confused by the people saying "OMG Kindles etc are bad because you can't lend books to people!"

Here, let me demonstrate: "Hey Andy, I've got a book on my Kindle that you said you really wanted to read. Do you want to borrow my Kindle for a couple of days?"

You could say something like "Sure, you can borrow mine in return."

It's a thing with a bunch of books on it. Yours is just something with a bunch of books on it - we could just swap for a couple of days. Unless of course you fear someone else getting their greasy nerd hands all over your BEAUTIFUL TRIUMPH OF DESIGN

I'm not talking about lending it to some random person in the street. That would be foolish.

Heck, I wouldn't lend a physical book (well, one that I liked) to someone that I thought I wouldn't get it back from.

I wouldn't want a good friend that I didn't trust.

But if I have a Kindle with the book I want to lend *and the book I am currently reading* on it... you might have the book I'm reading too, but you might not.

Plus sometimes my friends borrow books for months (once for several years) and move to Coventry or something. That's cool, 'cos books are cheap and also books I have read are not very useful to me (I only lend out the signed/first ed./otherwise special books to very trusted people). I would want my ebook reader (not a Kindle, as it happens) back... er, soon, because I use it a lot.

It is IMO a big downside of ebooks. but the "ebooks do not take up space in my house" factor is much bigger.

I am amused that if you make London Bridge the centre of your map, then the Circle line takes a figure-of-eight shape. I suspect this is an automatic consequence of the "time taken" + "bearing" projection used, but it's still a bit counter-intuitive. (Programmers say "counter-intuitive", support staff say "start again"...)
