Fantastic review of Donnie Darko, that explains why I both loved it and wasn't satisfied by it.

Hmm. I must admit that I found some of the review's points untrue for my own experience of the film. For example, it seemed apparent to me, upon first viewing the film, without any of the commentary or other extra materials, that "Frank was not Frank", but rather a force of some kind which was stepping in to give mankind (in the form of Donniw) the opportunity to choose sacrifice for the greater good. I didn't need to ponder the film in excessive detail to arrive at that idea. But I did agree, overall, that the film was too dense for viewers to really figure out without a little help from the director.

"Donnie Darko" certainly did make more sense to me after I'd watched it with the director's commentary, but I loved it and thought it was a great movie even before I listened to the commentary. *shrug* Just my 2 cents.

This is the bit that summed it up for me:

"I could easily name a dozen films from the last decade that were better. And yet... and yet... and yet... "
