Looks interesting. Unfortunately, what's more likely, that they'll release this in a way that benefits people, or that some manager at Microsoft will can the project for political reasons, e.g. using the iPhone as a proof of concept development platform?

Like so many tech ideas, it looks like a "just because we can" proposition. What's the actual benefit of being able to see a whole length of street through a narrow letterbox?

I was amused by the idea that users found it more efficient than using Google Street View, but only in as much as it felt like an artificial comparison ("Here, look for a shop front on Street View. Now try Street Slide. What do you mean you got bored of fiddling with a load of pictures and just Googled it?").

I suppose it's a nice variation on a theme, but not really bringing anything that's missing.

I've used Google streetview both to track down a shop I'd been to whose name I couldn't remember, and to send other people a link to where they were going. This doesn't look as useful for the latter, but more useful for the former.

At the moment, I'm looking at flats in a town I've never visited and this would make it *much* easier to browse what's nearby. I don't drive, so I'm not that interested in the roads or routes.

I actually really like the logos for the stores underneath ... it would be great to have something *like* this for going shopping in a strange town ... being able to pan along streets to see where the restaurants are, where the clothes shops are etc. and to build up a table of "favourites" or "filters" so it would highlight the kosher or halal restaurants, the charity shops or whatever other ...

... and in terms of having an additional view when navigating, having a better idea of where to turn (2nd intersection after the McDonalds) then I can see this sort of thing being very useful.

But I don't like the way they are playing with perspective in either view, and would like something a little more like CoolIris for translating along a street.
