Back in 2003, I was up watching the fireworks on the Crags/ Arthur's Seat. Someone had earlier managed to set the Crags alight, but it was a stray firework from our group (Compsoc, Gamesoc types) that set Arthur's Seat alight. The flames were 30 feet high (I guessed, not having a handy ruler), and I remember the burn marks were visible for the next three years. It wasn't the first time this group had managed this feat. I take no responsibility for this of course!

On the other hand, Gauze bushes are very flammable, and I think it's probably safer to allow a fire every now and again, rather than let it grow and become a lethal accident waiting to go off. The fire service used to burn the bushes every year or so, before they stopped for some reason.

Gorse is always on fire, it isn't advisable to purposefully burn it as fire also destroys the accumulated litter underneath and strips the soil of nutrients. But it's a highly flammable plant - a hot day would probably set it off, as would a flicked ciggarette end or Andrew out firestarting like the crazy wild thing he is.

Maybe they didn't like the acting in "Merlin."

I thought Arthur's Seat regularly catches fire! Especially when if it is dry (which it has been down here, don't know about Edinubrhg! And I left that typo in because - I mean wow, if I tried to get it that wrong, I couldn't!).
