Age discrimination laws are not as wide-ranging as race/religion/gender/sexual orientation discrimination, and only apply to employment, as far as I know. It's perfectly legal to refuse to do business with someone because of their age.

Are conditions attached to property deeds enforcable? What would happen if say a woman bought one of those houses, then at some point in the future became pregnant and had a child. Could the other residents actually petition a court to have her forcibly evicted?

Technically yes, although you might end up with the Court deciding that the covenant was unenforceable on grounds of public policy.

I think the 'minimum age 45' clause is aimed at this although of course with modern medical technology that is not such an obstacle.

The child-free village is interesting. I've often wondered what would happen if we lived in categorised towns, and I imagine it would lead to increased insular views... although part of it does appeal to me...

The village I grew up in, closed it's school. There are very few children now, and most of the old people feel sad about this, because they think it brought a bit of life to the place. However, I think the majority of people who said that have detached houses with private gardens. If they had flats or terraced housing, they might feel different ;)

In the 1970s I joined the National Association of Non-Parents. It later changed its name to National Association for Optional Parenthood, and a few years later it joined a crusade against childfree housing. I have never seen a better illustration of Santayana's line about redoubling efforts and losing sight of goals.

Those photos of the swimming tiger are brilliant - the first ones I've seen where the tiger's face actually looks just like a Chinese statue of a tiger. :)

My grandparents in California bought their house in a retirement community like the first one mentioned, with a minimum age limit, and children not allowed except for visits. The ambiance was very peaceful; walking along the streets, it was mostly quiet except for wind-chimes here and there.
