Fa la la la la, la crunch bleep la
Dec. 12th, 2007 05:49 pmLast weekend was a marvellously musical Morag one, starting on the Thursday, when
adrenalineanima drove myself,
henriksdal and
time_for_tea into the back of her car and carted us Northwards to Dundee, so we could see Ex Machina play in a battle of the bands. We made it there with minutes to spare, largely because Morag went missing for five minutes prior to the point they were supposed to be on stage so that we could make it.
We'd got lost driving around Dundee, and in the end I remembered the existence of Google Maps for Mobile, downloaded it, and found us a route through the streets. It was a fantastic demonstration of the coolness of modern technology. Best new feature for the software - it spots which cell broadcasting tower you're nearby and works out your location, so it instantly came up with a map of central Edinburgh.
Anyway, we got there, and the band were great - much more polished sounding than they had been when I saw them at Whistlebinkies, largely due to Morag being more confident I think (last time was her first ever gig with them), and so her voice sounded like it fitted a lot better. I then grabbed pizza with Mo and Bex while the next band played - they'd failed to bring with their singer, and sadly the guitarist's voice was...lacking. We came back in for he final band though, who turned out to be pretty good too, before flinging ourselves back to Edinburgh.
Friday lunchtime I went to see the Edinburgh University Singers at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (because Morag sings with them). Third time I've seen them there for the annual christmas concert. Very good, if not as much my kind of thing as Ex Machina are.
Saturday I went to see VNV Nation rather than going to see Morag sing with Loud and Proud. Twas a pity it clashed, as I'd have liked to see them, not least because Rose, Bex (and I think a few other people I know - Morvern?) sing with them. VNV Nation kicked arse though, and Morag/Morvern and Rose turned up for the end of the evening at Studio 24, which was nice. I'd been there since 9pm - myself,
is_not_well,
octpoid_horror,
kashandra,
dragal23 and
atropinesulfate had met up at Revolution for pre-gig cocktails (Mmmmmm, apple and cinnamon vodka), before wandering clubwards. We'd enjoyed the gig to varying degrees (as usual I found that being three rows from the front, in the middle of the horde helped my enjoyment levels significantly) and then retired upstairs to the afterparty, where numerous bleepy songs were playing. This lasted until 3am, at which point I staggered home with
is_not_well,
octopoid_horror and
kashandra for a foursome as the latter two were sleeping in my living room.
Sunday was quiet and relaxed, with Bex coming over in the afternoon to watch the opening episode of Firefly (it would have been more BSG, but Morag was busy in rehearsals) before we headed over to the McEwan Hall for the annual christmas carol service. where
marrog was once again singing as part of the Edinburgh University Singers. I hadn't been to a carol concert in about 20 years, so it was like coming to them fresh. And rather good fun it was too, once I remembered that my singing voice is about 17 octaves beneath my speaking voice. And then to the chaplaincy to steal mulled wine, before dashing (with Julie and John) for Lizzie's gig, arriving just after the first act had been on and then enjoying the rest of them on either a deliberately funny or an Oh My God funny level, depending on the quality levels.
Which has to have been the most musically intensive few days I've had in years.
