The twins who were former drug users performed significantly worse than their nonuser twins in the areas of motor skills and attention. However, the former drug users did much better on one test of attention that measured visual vigilance.

"Despite being abstinent for at least a year, abusers demonstrated neuropsychological impairments and selected advantages. These findings provide evidence of long-term residual effects of stimulant abuse," the study authors write.

Impressive and scary results. I've read that heavy enough stimulant use can cause significant neural damage. I'm curious if this study is showing actual neural damage or merely lingering chemical effects While I'm in favor of drugs of all sorts being legal, it's likely that significant use of many drugs should be prohibited by people working in certain professions. This study is especially chilling in light of the fact that US military pilots are routinely taking large doses of speed.

A year later is not going to be due to chemical effect. So it must be neural impairment. Shame really, considering the number of speed-freak friends I have.
