I'm amused that someone is trying to make ST:TNG synthohol - I wonder if that's where they got the idea.

The iphone app looks useful, but I don't believe it would actually work - underneath a mattress, I don't see how the accelerometer (which is good, but not spectacular) could possibly sense anything useful. I'm certain it would work if you strapped it to your torso, but that does not sound like comfortable sleeping to me.

The images show the phone on top of the mattress, not under it, so it's lying next to you, on a bouncy surface.

I have a Sleep Tracker, which is a watch with an alarm that works on the same sleep-cycle principle. It worked really well for about a month, then it ended up just like any other alarm - I don't feel particularly awake when it goes off, and just hit snooze and go back to sleep.

Not sure what conclusions to draw from that. I have weird sleep cycles? It worked because of the placebo effect and then wore off?

Could just be the "attention" effect. You were paying more attention for a month or so, so you woke yourself up.
