So you can't install whatever software you like, because Google still has control. On a truly open platform, piracy would be possible. Indeed, a jailbroken iPhone is more open than an Android OS handset (ignoring for the sake of the argument that Android OS handsets are, at the moment, a bit wank).

(Also, it really annoys when people put images from comics in their feed instead of just linking to them, especially with xkcd because the tooltip (which essentially also criticized the Droid in this case) is lost.)

So when you say you can't install whatever app you want on an iPhone, do you in fact mean that to install whatever app you want you have to first run one executable to jailbreak it?

Note that the tooltip doesn't appear on safari on the iPhone. There are of course apps that overcome this.

I still adore the iPhone but I'm getting increasingly frustrated by the antics of the App Store goons who have clearly lost the plot. Latest victims are the well-respected Mac development house Rogue Amoeba, who have basically said 'a plague on it, we're not developing for iPhone any more until you get your house in order'.

The Rogue Amoeba story is interesting. Apple computers include a little image of the computer, so that developers writing network software can utilise that image to show a link to a particular computer (I remember the first time I plugged in an iPod Mini and my desktop didn't just know it was an iPod Mini, it knew that it was green. I thought that was very very cool). Rogue Amoeba used those images, and promptly got a *bugfix* rejected from the store, for months and months. Rogue Amoeba's side of the story is here; the other interpretation is here.

I was the same when I connected my red nano for the first time and it showed up correctly - Isn't it amusing how excited geeks get at the smallest of things.

It's bloody irritating, to be sure. Why hasn't Trillian been approved yet?

I don't currently have any messaging client on my iPhone and i'd love one. I didn't know trillian were currently looking for approval. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I love my iPhone, but sometimes I wish I had gone for a windows mobile device again. Actually honestly I liked my old nokia N95 and there's not that much added functionality in the ihone. It's just pretty and shiny and my precious.
