listened again. 4'strums' per chord in first half, 2 'strums' 2nd half. Same chord sequence(I,V,VIm,IV).

Yes, they start off with E B C#m A. And then they switch to C#m A E B.
Same sequence of raw chords I suppose but different starting point. Id like to say that the second one is in a minor key and therefore in fact completely diferent, but it feels strongly like it wants to resolve to an E and I can't remember how the various songs wrap up. Given they're pop songs they probably just repeat and fade...

There were quite a few Australasian songs there that might not be globally recognisable (well mostly Australian; Bic Runga whose face graces the embed is a Kiwi and I'd argue the case for Crowded House).

hang on, just a moment here back the hell right up. so this formula applies to all music? Because i certanly didnt hear any Stravinski, Tallis, Boulez, Bach* or Tavener in all that.

[thanks, i owe you a pint]

*Bach did use this sequence, one, in one phrase of one of his trillion feuges.

Been done (although he talks about the 8-chord version of Pachabel's canon, he only ever plays the first four):
