(Not, as said above, that I have the space for it at the moment.)

Date: 2008-12-16 10:31 am (UTC)Assuming RB2 works with the guitars I already have and assuming it ever comes out in Europe, I'll pick up the disc. I also have to buy a USB mic for the girlfriend at some point.

Date: 2008-12-16 12:04 pm (UTC)My prejudice is that Harmonix actually understand music, so that although I enjoyed GHIII, it no longer felt like making music (you didn't have to play precisely any more), and I believe that Rock Band still does. I don't know about GHWT.
So I'm conflicted and have, temporarily, taken it off my wish list while I think about it.
When we cleared up for Christmas, I discovered that the living room contained four plastic guitars, along with five dance mats, a set of bongos and a set of maracas. There were also nine actual real melodeons, a banjo, three harmonicas and several recorders. And no violin (a different story). Other controllers: Wii Fit, a snowboard controller, four wiimotes, two nunchucks, four wheels, three gamecube controllers, two Playstation controllers and two PS microphones. Two dancemats and the snowboard controller have gone to the tip (e-waste, though in fact they all work to some degree), and we are only keeping essential melodeons downstairs.

However, I think my preference towards GH2 is mostly down to it being the first one I played.

Ask those who crashed 'pon the rocky shores of Wolfmother on Hard and Expert how they feel about that.

Date: 2008-12-17 09:24 am (UTC)Shame GH1 and 2 aren't available on the Wii - I'd have liked to see how I did on them.

Date: 2008-12-16 05:42 pm (UTC)The guitar that comes with GHWT is, like the RB one, a little spongier in action than the earlier guitars - something that's initially hard to get used to but as I've said to you before is I think like moving to a spongy keyboard from a clacky one - better once you're used to it.
There are a couple of features in GHWT that are missing from earlier GHs that I like, the one that springs to mind being the fact that you can still rack up the star sections even if you're on Star Power at the time.
I also like that when you play a section you play the whole 'gig' at once, which has a nice sense of progression to it, although it does mean that if you're playing with personal profiles (as we were on Si's XBox) you can't swap parts - ie: you can't sing on one 'cause you know it, then pass the mic to whoever knows the next one and swap instruments without someone else playing as you for the duration of that song.
From the kits I used (I think the basic sets for both) the GHWT one is better because it has symbols and is more the shape of a real kit. I don't subscribe to Si's claim that the RB drums aren't as bouncy - I think they're just as bouncy, but what they do have is less grip - the texture of the GHWT kit is more like that of proper practice pads and it makes a difference to your precision and ability to loosen up your wrists and play with proper posture - bounce is no help if your sticks are skiting all over the pad. I have no doubt, however, that this depends on the kit you have as I understand more expensive ones are available for both? But honestly, at that point just buy a drum kit?
As to the song selection, that obviously depends entirely on your taste and since I have no idea what the download options (if any) are on the Wii I can't comment.
Finally, my opinion is no doubt skewed by the fact that we were playing GHWT 'properly' and working through it, and I enjoy that more than just having a mess about sing song as I did when Hugh brought along RB1 to a party.
