I recall toothpaste being considered a mild poison, actually. Swallowing an amount that normally goes on a toothbrush is supposed to be okay, but more than that, you're supposed to call poison control.

Fluoride is a bit nasty in large doses or over a prolonged period. I'd recommend not making a habit of consuming the stuff.

Smaller doses, I think.

Even wikipedia things you are a mutant:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothpaste#Toxicity

With the exception of toothpaste intended to be used on pets such as dogs and cats, and toothpaste used by astronauts, most toothpaste is not intended to be swallowed, and doing so may cause nausea or diarrhea; fluoride toothpaste is toxic when swallowed. Extended consumption while the teeth are forming can result in fluorosis. This is why young children should not use fluoride toothpaste except under close supervision. There are several non-fluoride toothpaste options available in the market for those with no tolerance to fluoride.

I'm sure my toothpaste has 'do not swallow' written on it.

Oh, that's awesome. I did all of my toothpaste swallowing as a child. Fluorosis?

Yeah, Andrew, I don't think the warnings used to be on my toothpaste. Now it is, and a lot of communities in the US are fighting over whether to keep fluoridating the water supply. Some people blame it for the modern mystery ailments such as allergies and cancers.

I think I only ever swallowed toothpaste twice. I recall not caring for the feeling of it.

I was actually taught to swallow, and did as a child; once I noticed that fluoride toothpaste is toxic, I stopped.

Hmm, you have weird habits but you also are renowned for havign a delicate stomach and avid certain foodstuffs. Have you considered(AND YES I KNOW YOU RUDDY HAD THEM AS A CHILD - WE GOT THAT MESSAGE)not swallowing for a while and actually spitting?

DO you know it's considered bad practice to rinse after brushing - you should leave your mouth minty fresh as rinsing and spitting breaks down some of the barrier the toothpaste is giving?

I wish wine tasted like vinegar! I LOVE vinegar!

And you have complained about your stomach a bit...

Well, maybe you just like complaining, but I was also led to believe that you complained about your stomach on a semi regular basis. And no, I cant give you examples, I'm a big picture person!

you are *always* going on about your stomach and how you can't have this that or the other beecause of your delicate allergies.

Maybe the toothpaste makers thought a 'do not swallow' warning on adult toothpaste was kinda unneccessary?

...wheat? You make out your dislike of it (based on some kind of physiological response exaggerted out of all proportions!)is of nut allergy levels!

Not that you're fussy or anything poppet, just... delicate with lots of sensitivities, like ladies in the eighteenth century with their smelling salts and wee lap dogs, y'know.

I'm supposed to use high fluoride toothpaste and not rinse after brushing (I run my tongue under the tap) so the fluoride builds up the enamel, or something.

well, how much barrier could toothpatse give, seriously? whose ever heard of keeping invaders out with toothpaste? could we cover up the hole in the ozone layer with toothpaste? I think it would make a poor barrier! heehee

You're not the only freak, but it's a close-run thing.

Have you noticed that you have odd markings on your teeth at all, particularly front teeth? My dentist was puzzled by those once and it may be linked.

I just read the WP article on fluorosis, and I wonder if that is what caused the white marks on my ex's teeth, and the teeth of other people I have known. In my ex's case, she did once have braces.

I think a poll would show, many more people would swallow "that" over toothpaste...

but swallowing, ick!!

all that crap all over your teeth, is washed off into the gloop, and you swallow it!? try spitting, see if you feel any different! i mean, eating just before bed, is a bad thing!!

Be careful with young children because they are more likely to swallow the toothpaste instead of spitting it out. Use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste when they brush, and encourage them to spit out as much as possible.

Not sure if your Colgate is from that company though; I've noticed there are German products with the same brandname as American ones, but with different ingredients (Pepsodent, I recall; my mom bought some over there and brought it back, and its active ingredient was different than in the American version).
