It depends. Vertigo titles are almost certainly going to end up in trades. Other titles, well.. it's never a sure thing and if you don't buy the issue and support the series then it could easily get cancelled before it even gets collected.

For that reason I do have a regular monthly in addition to the Vertigo & Independant titles I support by trade.

Another issue is that decompressed storytelling "written for the trade" is compromising many titles. In one case, Mighty Avengers is so far out of sync with its sister titles that it's an entire story behind everything else (which even feature those characters).

When I first got into comics I took one look at the shelf of single issues and one look at the graphic novels and thought- single issues suck. But if you're already buying single issues, the time lag could seem tremendous when you switch to just collected.

I also see Scott's point, that small titles might get cancelled. Hopefully they'll go the way of small tv series - if putting out a graphic novel is equivalent to putting out a dvd...

[whats the plural of tv series? How do you pronounce that?]
