Farmboy meets old man, gets told he's somebody.

Farmboy has adventures with either a band of experienced adventurers or similar misfits.

Farmboy has destiny. Realises said destiny.

Farmboy gets princess/popular girl who was previously out of his league.

Funnily enough, that's a fairly popular plot.
