I'm currently converting a bunch of files to MPEG, so my MVP will play them.  However, while the software I have (MainConcept MPEG Encoder) works fine, it doesn't batch things well - I have to queue up each file rather than pointing at a whole folder at once.

Anyone got any recommendations (Windows-based, obviously)

I don't know if it'll do the trick, but I think you might have success with tmpegenc.

dpPowerAmp music converter, and I like it a lot.

I also use iTunes to rip to MP3 (yes, on my Windows XP PC)

That's about the limit of useful comments I can make.

For the older versions they had instructions of where to go to download a LAME encoder (for licensing reasons), for the newer versions I believe you need to register the powerpack (or something like that) which includes the MP3 encoder. Certainly the version I have on this PC allows me to convert and to specify upto 320kbps at 48khz sampling (or so the dialog box would have me believe) with a choice of mono, stereo, joint stereo, dual channel or [as source].

You do mean MP3s when you say MPEG don't you, or were you thinking of something else and I've misunderstood?

oh, and batching ...

... dpbpoweramp mc seems to do batches beautifully. You can select multiple files, specify a new destination directory and rename files during the conversion.
