I have spent the evening reading the first 169 episodes of a new web comic.

And listening to Opeth - who are probably best described as melodic death metal.

Yes, yes, I know.

Errr ... which web comic ?

(and I've also seen Opeth described as "extreme progressive metal" - extreme vocals combined with rambling progressive melodies, I guess. Let me know if you want to borrow any of their albums (mp3-style, that is)).

... actually, I noticed your other post mentioning the comic about five minutes after reading the comment, and couldn't be bothered following up with another comment :-)

I'm currently....er.....acquiring some of them out of curiosity.

They sound rather like a good favourite of mine - Nightwish, though, uh, less scandanavian. I love nightwish, as they're both rocky and, well, the lead singer is a great classically trained soprano :D. And the whole orchestral-with-electric-guitars thing works well too....

yich! sounds dire. I loathe operatic sopranos. Sopranos in general, actually. They never quite get the vowel-mangling in the upper register (that you have to try to do because of the high pitch) quite right so that I can never understand a word they sing.

Of course, any heavy band with a female singer is the object of my insane envy and hatred (because nobody wanted that 15 years ago).

(Yes, I'm a contralto)

Lol, they really aren't that bad. To be fair, she is almost never a soprano and almost always an alto....I can sing along (fasletto...I'm male....it's fun :D) quite happily, although she may stick down to avoid said vowel-wrangling. What I really love is their range of stuff - everything from solo voice with slight orchestral backing (Two for Tragedy), to something that almost makes your ears bleed, and *is* Gothic Rock (Planet Hell). I've got all their work....wish I paid for some of it, my mother would kill me if I brought back anything other than Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven, or anything like that, but that's an aside.

Of course, putting music into words is not easy....as I've just found out on my GCSE Music Listening exam this morning.....so the best way is to hear it. I have a publicly accessible ftp server. On a completely unrelated note, I keep all my music in /120 Gig/iTunes/iTunes Library/Music/, I think. On a third unrelated note, you might want to put ftp://landak.zapto.org/ before that :D.

Oh, and the wikipedia entry is good (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightwish).

I'd like to but I just don't have the time. I read what's more important...

[laughs]

It is rather good, isn't it?

Better than Indie Tits, imho.
