You should vote: Liberal Democrat
The LibDems take a strong stand against tax cuts and a strong one in favour of public services: they would make long-term residential care for the elderly free across the UK, and scrap university tuition fees. They are in favour of a ban on smoking in public places, but would relax laws on cannabis. They propose to change vehicle taxation to be based on usage rather than ownership.

Date: 2005-04-12 10:58 pm (UTC)But most of the people I know are more natural Lib Dems than anything else - they just discount them out of hand.

BTW , as someone now living in Germany with the Euro - trust me , you DONT want it. Its f**ked things up here big style and I dont know any Germans , regardless of their political ideals , who wouldn`t jump at the chance to go back to DM.

Date: 2005-04-13 07:43 am (UTC)The Euro - I'm intrigued - what kind of negative effects has it had on you?

Date: 2005-04-14 07:15 am (UTC)Negative effects of the Euro ; put quite simply we are all a good deal worse off since its introduction. The Euro came in at 1 Euro to 2 DM almost exactly , but while our salaries were exactly converted prices in shops were not. What used to cost 5 DM is now 4-5 Euros. We have always had much higher taxes than the UK , but much cheaper shopping and while it is still slightly cheaper here , it is far more than it used to be. Add to that the fact that Germany no longer controls its own currency making the current problems in the old east worse than they need to be and its easy to see why the Euro has no fans here.
Don`t forget that while the UK has been promised a referendum , Germans were simply told when the Euro was to replace the DM.

Date: 2005-04-14 07:34 am (UTC)And I agree about control of the currency - I don't actually think that the eurozone economies were similar enough to have the euro be that successful.
Still, it's more successfull than the dollar, making imports from there nice and cheap.

Date: 2005-04-14 09:12 am (UTC)Happened with decimalisation over here. Not really the government's actual action, but that of the companies selling the things. Of course the gov could have made efforts to prevent/crackdown on this, I suppose, but how exactly, would they enforce it?
And as a good capitalist, shouldn't you approve of companies maximising profits for their shareholders ? :-)
I think that, like my husband, you may actually be a feudalist masquerading as a Conservative :-)

Date: 2005-04-13 07:20 pm (UTC)I was not surprised to find that it insists I should be voting Lib Dem too, although I am quite certain that my politics are much closer to those of the Green Party. I've tried various permutations, but things which increase the 'Green rating' generally seem to increase the 'Lib Dem factor' even more.
I've sent them an email asking what it would take to return a 'Green' answer; I'll see what they say...

Date: 2005-04-12 10:55 pm (UTC)I def. don't agree with the suggestion about road charging (I'm open to ideas - I just don't think that's a good one).
Guess I'll be taking a look at the manifesto in the next few days.
