A critical question came up at lunch today, for which I do not have a satisfactory answer. So, throwing it open to the floor:

Are there *any* movies which would not be improved by the addition of Godzilla?

While I'm sure Pride and Prejudice and Godzilla would be an amazing experience, I think merely adding Godzilla to the existing P&P movie would not be an improvement.

Yeah, that was my feeling - adding Godzilla to many things would be fun, but would not improve the original exactly.

There is a file Pride and Prejudice and zombies. Rotten Tomatoes says [it] manages to wring a few fun moments out of its premise, but never delivers the thoroughly kooky mashup its title suggests.

I'm not a fan of either but maybe Godzilla is a class above zombies ?

"West Side Story" would not be improved by the addition of Godzilla. It really needs the Sharks and Jets to be "alike in dignity," and Godzilla by his nature is NOT. And if they turn from one another to both focus on Godzilla, you lose the personal conflict that drives the tragic love story. You could make an exciting movie out of "Godzilla's West Side Story," but it would either be a joke or a completely different thing.

I don't remember any Algerian resistance there, but the idea of Godzilla being on the side of Nazis, kidnapping Ilsa, etc, would make it look very different. Still, in the end, the plane flies away.

Define "improved".

If you add Godzilla to any porn flick, it will quite quickly stop being a porn flick. Is it an improvement?

The answer depends entirely on whether you like Godzilla. For myself, Godzilla is a particular flavor that does not improve most other things.

Hmm. For movies I haven't cared to watch, it is possible that the addition of Godzilla might have made them more attractive. For movies that I have watched and enjoyed, and which I feel are rather perfect as they are: no.

However, for movies I have watched and hated, Godzilla certainly couldn't have made them worse. Westworld. Terms of Endearment. White Nights.[1]

The whole 60's fashion in black and white thing would improve them as well.

[1] I was just scrounging for the names of any movie I have willingly watched since 2000, when last we went to a theatre to watch Chicken Run. Blank.

A Passage to India (with Godzilla)? Two flavours that do not go well together: Merchant & Ivory mannered Edwardiana, and MONSTER SMASH.

I'm not sure Godzilla would play well with anything by Peter Greenaway, either.

I submit The Lord of the Rings trilogy, on the grounds that we’ve already seen what happens when Peter Jackson decides to insert extra action scenes into Tolkien (proof: The Hobbit)

I don't think that 'The Usual Suspects' would be improved, since Godzilla would most likely step on & squash the principle characters, thus depriving the audience of a great reveal.

...although the giggles as it happened might offset that.
