I don't agree with 'positive discrimination' (be it race/sex/whatever). It's a very glib way of not really dealing with a perceived problem.

[You can take it as read that I don't agree with negative discrimination either, btw].

That depends on whether you regard centuries of exploitation as a "perceived problem" or not.

... so on a fundamental level we agree.

However, I think if we're trying to create a more multi-cultural work environment (if we use that as an example) then it has to come from increasing awareness in whatever communities of the opportunities that are available, and providing support/ career guidance in getting there.

Equally there has to be movement and education within the establishment, challenging those in charge to get past their own preconceptions for who might be most suitable for the job. This can't be artificial.

It's something that needs more work than just hiring someone because the rules say they need to hire so many employees of x minority/race/sex. That's trying to avoid the problem rather than addressing it.

This is impressively true, especially among US libertarians.

I guess if you put a bunch of white folk on the lower rung as well and then have the black guy saying "let me tread on these white folk to help me up" then it might be more accurate.

Not saying it's not shit what's happened, but there's plenty of poor, underprivileged white people as well. How about we focus positive discrimination on people from underprivileged backgrounds rather than the actually-entirely-arbitrary colour of skin?
