A while back I posted a link to a site that you could give a band name to and it would show what bands they were connected to (musically speaking). Anyone got that link, cos I'm fucked if I can find it again.

(Lilian wants to know who The Doves are derivative of...)

There used to be this awesome suggestion engine that would take the names of bands and spit out names of other bands you'd enjoy. I've been looking for something like that again for ages.

This sounds close, so if you find the link please do repost it.

Ooh that';s fab - ta Steve.

Worryingly it has already pinpointed a band who are 100% my kinda thing and I had never heard of. Am I really this predictable?

It has some weird ideas. It connected Reef to G-Unit and Outkast. I think it's sick...

Tis an obvious one, but www.allmusicguide.com also offers something similar to that. I consider it the IMDb of music.

After seeing the link to musicplasma here (and in [livejournal.com profile] green_amber), I went and played with it again. Unfortunately, it still hasn't heard of a number of bands I really like, and doesn't have much new to tell me about the ones I like that it does have. Pity, really, 'cos it's a neat idea ...

(for the record, it didn't know Graveland, Arcana, or Sopor Aeturnus. The last two are usually categorised as "neo-folk" or "neo-classical" or darkwave or gothic or ... well, they're tricky to categorise, but those are the places they usually end up.)

I went looking for musicplasma again a few days ago too! Was a little disappointed that the database doesnt appear to have changed since it was introduced. Also try http://www.audioscrobbler.com/ for looking for similar artists. Not as pretty, but useful all the same.
