Date: 2004-07-03 11:08 am (UTC)Education is a problem in any poor section of the US, not just the hick areas of the South. You can see the same things in N/NE Portland, N. Omaha, East St. Louis, Compton, etc. In some cases it's a cycle of stupidity disguised as "culture" (inner city ghettos, for example), and in some, it's a realization that the educated tend to leave the rural for the urban. That will kill a town that has no interest in transforming itself when its major industry is done cheaper overseas or by corporate entities.
