There's a move to make
Britain smoke-free, but
apparently a minister
publicly spoke against the
move, saying that it'd
deprive poverty-level
mothers of one of their few
pleasures. Because there's
nothing quite like seeing a
mother deny a child a
magazine because she
can't buy that and a packet
of 20 Red Band, as I did
today.

Which I wasn't in the mood
for, so I helped the kid
magically "find" a pound
coin on the floor of the
supermarket so she could
buy her magazine herself.
And stood there to ensure
it didn't go into the cigarette
fund. Like it would have
killed her to buy ten and
get her kid something to
read. Fucking scum.

Smoke-free bars. Lovely
idea. Don't want any of that
filthy smoke around while
you're pouring liver-
paralysing carbonated
chemical muck mixed in
metal tanks down your
neck. Throwing up your
stomach lining into the
toilet/bin/person next to
you/drunken pick-up's
mouth = good. Having a
smoke = bad.

I remember an old girlfriend
telling me how she'd walked
in on mutual friends at a
party, drunk as hell and
literally, in her words,
"fucking and chucking." So
drunk that the motion of
sex was making them
vomit into each other's faces
as they were at it.

The things this society
chooses to care about never
fail to amuse me.

Yes, lung cancer doubleplusbad,
obviously. My dad died of
it. I will quit again. But I've
known more people who
died of the drink, or may as
well have done. A local guy,
Drinky Bill, used to be able
to talk, fifteen years ago.
But he drank until the front
of his brain died, and now
you see him wandering
around town with old shit
stains on his trousers,
talking to people about
sandwiches.

Time for a drink.
