I think it was Ellen Galford (in one of her Scottish novels) who described it as "a cathedral mixed up with a lavatory"... (but I could be wrong: I've been remembering that line with a snigger every time I pass it, but I haven't read the book I found it in, whatever it was, for years and years...).
