Four out of 10 white people do not want an Asian or black Briton as their neighbour, according to a survey published this week.

The Mori survey for Prospect magazine found that 39% of those asked would prefer to live in an area only with people from the same ethnic background. Forty-one per cent of whites and 26% of ethnic minority people surveyed wanted the races to live separately. Over half of all ethnic groups wanted to live in diverse areas.

The poll found older people were most in favour of living apart from other races. Only 40% of people over 55 disagreed with the idea, compared with 64% of 16- to 34-year-olds.

Mori said people had a "inflated view of the scale of the issue", with people overestimating the numbers of first generation immigrants by four times the actual amount. Britons think that first generation immigrants comprise 23% of the population, while the real figure is 6%.

One in five people believes immigrants should get less welfare provisions than British citizens, though there is a marked class difference. Just 12% of the top two socio-economic groups support less welfare for immigrants compared to 29% of the lowest two socio-economic groups. This is the group most likely to need welfare and most likely to read rightwing newspapers which have been accused of running a scaremongering campaign against asylum seekers and new immigrants.

Personally, I find most of Seattle to be much too whitebread. I like diversity of opinions and viewpoints. One of the many ways to do this is to have different ethnic backgrounds. Having only a narrow viewpoint leads to sterility of thought and easy defeat by those with more diverse thought clusters.

Personally, I don't care who my neighbours are so long as they extend the same consideration to me as I would happily give to them.

I'd prefer to have no neighbours at all, doesn't matter if they're sky blue pink!
If I have to have neighbours, I'd like ones without children

Why dont they have that in Estate Agents? Selling property based on "near no schools, not on a route home for a school, an unpopoular area for people with children"

Bliss!

Oh, yes - I just thought you'd made quite a few posts on a variety of issues. Each one was interesting and worthwhile. But yes, it is outrageous. Although some of those people don't want to live next to a white person. If either of the people they don't want to live next to are also in the 40% than I can see their point - I wouldn't wnat to live next to a racist either. But otherwise, it is outrageous. I'd be interested to know how many of the isolationists have actually had any real contact with anyone from another ethnic background. There are large parts of this country that are still pretty well monocultures, and it's much easier to have an irrational fear of something you haven't actually experienced.
