Life with two kids: Pleading for siblings

Sophia: "Yeah, I want a baby sister."

Me: "I'm afraid mummy and daddy are too old for any more babies."

Sophia: "That's okay, we can just go to the adoption centre."

Gideon: "Yeah, we can go to the shop!"

Next time they'll go shopping and bring someone, if not a kid, then a kitten.

A puppy is on the list for as soon as Jane and I have any spare energy.

I get the impression that two is quite enough.

I was one of four, and while I wouldn't have wished the others into nonexistence, that was an ordeal.

Two is quite enough for the "you both have a person you can run around with outside" side of things, and takes a bit of pressure off the parents to deliver all entertainment.

When you go beyond that point you basically have to either draft in help of some kind or let them go feral. Which is fine, but not what we had the energy, space, or money for.

There was a bit of feral in my family, though not a lot. There was also an au pair for a year when the fourth was born, so that my mother could care for the baby and the au pair wrangle the 2-year-old and the 4-year-old.

My parents seemed to like having four, though my father - good and reliable as he was at what he did do (earning money, driving us everywhere, fixing things) - was not the hands-on interactive dad that you are. I'm a little envious, actually.

This is even funnier when I remember you talk like one of the Young Ones and the kids are Scottish.

They're from Edinburgh though, so their accents could mostly be English.

When he was about four, my nephew asked whether I had any children, and when I said no, suggested that I could buy one. Had to explain that this was generally frowned upon. 😉

Clever kid's logic! My brother and I had a phase when we pestered my mom for a little sibling. Considering she raised three kids and a cat mostly alone, we understood later why she said nope, never going to happen.

Sophia would like a sister. And Gideon would just like there to be someone who's smaller than him, I think. But no.
