The salary requirement's only one of the financial blockers: we have to pay around a thousand quid per year per person for R. and her kids for NHS (eldest is twenty), plus the visa fees are far in excess of processing cost, and that's without the extra cost of if you need a lawyer to navigate you through the maze. In various ways, even US immigration (famously welcoming!) is rather nicer than UK - in our case, US is much cheaper and looser rules. We have another round of visa applications coming up this summer which fortunately coincides with being after when I should remortgage anyway.
