Mileage numbers on "self-driving" cars should be viewed skeptically, as they spend a lot of time driving empty at night around the blocks of the quieter outer neighborhoods of San Francisco in order to clock uneventful, traffic-less, pedestrian-less miles.

3) Self-driving cars may be, on average, safer than human drivers - though I'm not trusting anything that comes from the car manufacturer's own website - but when they do cause accidents, they are real grotesque things that no human driver would commit.

I'm not counting self-driving vehicles as safe, nor am I in favor of letting them loose on public streets, until that caveat ceases to be the case.
