or, a majority of Brits are not paying enought attention to the issue to have a consistent opinion.

Oh, I assumed it was "a majority want A, a majority want B, but they're mostly not the same people, so almost nobody wants both A and B".

If you define "majority" as "more than half the people who didn't abstain" then you could even get this situation in a case where nobody wanted both A and B.

But I admit to being too busy to read the actual link :-)

I can just say that, as a non-Brit, I'm at least interested in the British monarchy. I am not interested in the Church of England. So I am inclined to believe this analysis.

I value non-political people who have compassion and extensive contact with real people having a say in society.

In an ideal world these points may be related.

I'm with Douglas Adams (number 33):
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

I am in favour of diluting the politicians with a smattering of good non-politicians. As I say, this may or may not do that.

Looks like next year will be a good time to start reading Georgette Meyer

Georgette Heyer (H not M) goes out of copyright in 50-year countries (which includes Canada and hence www.fadedpage.com).
Her books may thus be freely (if not legally) available on the internet.
