Portrait of the swimmer as a young man.

(Gideon's swimming lessons are going well, and despite the shivering and sensory overload he's actually having a great time.)

Here via James Nicoll's reading list. When my kids were that age (twin boys), and were learning to swim, I put them in wetsuits, wrists to ankles. Or in the summer in an outdoor pool, short or long sleeve to mid-thigh. One was quite thin, like 10th or 20th percentile of weight-vs-age and his lips would turn blue and he'd just shake when he got out of the water.

wow. Are pools much colder now than when I was young? I was skinny has hell as a kid (still am) and mostly found them too warm for any serious swimming. I recall there were also "baby pools" that were much warmer.

The real shivers hit me after outdoor swims about 15 mins AFTER I get out. I read that body temperature continues to drop for a while after you get out. So do watch out for that!
