5. As a person who goes places and stays in hotels in central parts of the city, my favorite and most memorable ones have been the hotels that are part of a mixed economic ecosystem. A street of hotels is dead boring. A street like Princes Street should carry two or maybe three big hotels, with good ground-floor bars and restaurants, but the shops are what make it an attractive place to stay, and at that I don't mean the high-end international stuff, but the local ones that I won't find in the Standard Upscale Retail planners' handbook.

If you wander about 10m behind Princes Street on to Rose Street then you will find many of those.
