Loaned, haha. Possession is nine tenths of the law. Are we going to send an Armada in when we don't get them back?

If I was Greece that would be exactly what I'd do.

Or rather I'd say "Sure, you can have them back when you can show me the mythical permission you got to take them in the first place!"

It is obvious that if the BM "lent" back the Elgin Marbles to Greece they would never get them back. It may however be a diplomatic solution to what is these days an embarrassment (particularly if the BM's constitution prohibits giving them - or anything - back).

I suspect that it would be possible to make copies that are identical for all practical purposes if the Trustees still wanted them on display. It's perfectly respectable to display copies of original works - in fact I believe a lot of "Greek" statues in collections are actually Roman copies of the originals. As it happens the Museum of Classical Archaeology in Cambridge has one of the largest collections of plaster casts of ancient statues in the world.

Not just artistic works, either. Last museum I went to had an exhibit "Narwhal Tusk", which on closer inspection had "(3d-printed)" in the not-especially-small print. Apparently this is perfectly normal.

Has there been a decline in the frequency and quality of bus services / rail commuter services?

Nope. Well, mostly because of the tram works and North Bridge being fixed. Using a car has gotten harder and harder.
