5: You must own your online identity. You need to have an email address that is independent of any provider, running on a domain that you own. It is too important to leave it up to others.

Do you run your own email server? I thought that pretty much nobody did that any more! Does it run from your home, or is it co-located somewhere?

I do not. The identity is tied to the email address -- the server that runs that address is of no consequence and can be anywhere. So I pay for hosting that includes email, but if I want I can take my domain and do the hosting elsewhere, without having to change my address. I've done it two times before, no big deal, since I am the owner of the domain.

Ah, when you said "independent of any provider" I assumed you meant "Is provided entirely by yourself".

In which case I absolutely *do* have my own domain. The email server is just hosted by Google.

Yeah, I can see how you could read that. What I meant with "independent of any provider", I meant that you should not rely on account@provider.com for anything. You rely on a provider for infrastructure, such as your internet subscription or the mail server -- and that's fine. You should not rely on them for your identity.

You can copy the contents of a mail server to another one. How well it does so depends on the method used.

I've literally dragged/dropped using IMAP before. But most large mail systems will import:

When I looked into it for past small biz clients I could never find a way. Possibly just their specific providers.

If both sides support IMAP then it should be easy - but possibly manual.

Yeah, I noted that link is not generic - rather instructions to use a tools provided by a specific service / product / company (fastmail).

But if you've got IMAP on both sides then you can literally open both sides in Thunderbird and drag/drop across.

Or, if you're doing a bunch of it, use a tool like https://www.softaken.com/imap-to-imap-migration

I have literally visited the servers at my email provider and I personally know the people who own the provider and who handle the servers. I think that's adequately lowered my risk.

Yes. Clients of mine used to have regular problems with their emails to *their* clients going straight to "promotions" or spam folder.

(I don't. I also don't think poetry has to rhyme or even fit a rigid meter, but do think it isn't just normal sentences / partial sentences with random/too many line breaks! YMMV)

I'm a poet and I can write rhyming, metered stuff but it's just that I don't most of the time. If you're talking about internal rhymes, inscape, alliteration and so forth, then I'm your woman!:o)

I'm a songwriter. So I probably rhyme/near rhyme more often. Not always. Especially when starting with the music. I'm especially sensitive to bad (wrong!) prosody in songs. Unforgivable sin in my own personal book!

I've migrated from a Gmail to a Hey address (before the Hey company owners imploded themselves and made mentioning their product embarrassing). It's reasonably easy to set up a forwarding rule in Gmail to forward all incoming email. You can then set up labeling for any forwarded email in the new service and slowly change email identities over time as you notice the forwarded label.
