Party Writeup

The party was most excellent. Also bodacious. It may even have been phat, but I'm not sure of the precise meaning of that and I don't want to show my complete lack of connection with the youth of today by exposing my ignorance. Let's just say it was good and leave it at that, shall we?
Marianne had done an excellent job of tracking down everyone that Billy had ever known, although there were a few people that she couldn't trace or couldn't make it. It was certainly a bit of a shock to walk into the living room and meet the two friends I spent most of my first year with.
Alex seemed to be doing well for himself - having moved on to teaching literacy (which, as I remarked at the time, we could certainly do with more of). He's slaving away to get a qualification so that he can move to somewhere where a one bedroom shoebox doesn't cost £130,000. Richard's actually about to move back to Stirling to be a restaurant manager (also his job up in the northern wastes of Scotland).
I was also a bit shocked to see Kenny, who had been a bit of a mess the last time I saw him, but has sorted himself out admirably and is in the process of buying his own restaurant in Oban (it's still somewhat strange to me that people I know are engaged in this kind of mature behaviour - I think that some part of me thinks that I'm eternally 22). Paul and Nikki, who I last saw around 1995 have also moved Northwards, and are being happily prosperous in Aberdeen (Nikki was the first of several people to collar me for advice on IT - every bugger seems to be doing a conversion course into my speciality. They're my jobs, I tell you, mine!). Paul's working with the council, doing something to do with Welfare, but I'm not quite sure what.
Chris somehow made it over from Germany and was ensconced on the sofa with some very old friends (before my time, hard though that is to believe) and holding forth to a rapt audience whenever I bumped into him. I didn't get a chance to chat much to him, but that was true of several people, and at least he's on MSN...
Dave, Abby and George turned up together - I completely failed to recognise Dave, half-recognised Abby and it took George's appearance before they all suddenly fell into place - we chatted briefly and Abby's an accountant at a publishers, while Dave's an office manager. Both seemed fairly happy with where they are. No idea what George is up to as I spotted Sarah at that point and leapt over to be pervy.
And pulled myself up short, as I swiftly realised that the nervous young girl I had shared a flat with had matured into a confident, reasonable, charming person. And I'm not just saying that because she's also very pretty. Anyway, she's nearly finished getting her counselling accreditation.
Quick roundup of all the people I didn't get many details on: Marianne's a Psychiatric Nurse, Andy (Torch) is becoming a radiologist, Dave (Denim) is working on erosion and water movement in Aberdeen, Nick Macgregor's back at Uni also doing an IT conversion, me and Sarah managed to persuade John he should do a night course in the same, Chris the younger is off to Australia for a year and Susan's bloody well not moving to Aberdeen if I have anything to do with it. If I missed you off then I'm dead sorry, feel free to add a note below on what you're up to. Think of this as Billy's Friend's Reunited!

Date: 2003-09-08 02:11 am (UTC)It was great how people haven't really changed in basic personality except maybe to mellow out (a lot in Jim's case!) Sarah C was the exception, as no doubt is meant to be, and seemed more hyper and younger than in our uni days!
Of course, I didn't get drunk, didn't get in a fight and didn't drag anybody off to bed (or even a corner), so I suppose that I have changed at least. Hmm, I suppose that everybody would be able to note the ways in which they were different and maybe didn't show.
Us 'old crew' had a great time in the corner, missing a few, but more than making do with the rest.
