I'd never considered it before, but now I think about it, it would be a perfectly plausible strategy for news sites to enforce paywalling inconsistently, precisely so that people would unsuspectingly spread links to articles they hadn't realised were not free...

FWIW, I've noticed that my newer mobile devices with adblockers running are often able to bypass paywalls, at least to the extent of letting me turn the article into text (which I generally do anyway, for legibility). Laptop browsers with noscript/adblock are not bypassing, but they are all older software.

Ooh, and assign a random-number link to those viewing it from their own website, but maintain the same address for those accessing it directly from a link shared with friends; after X number of views indicates it is gone viral, the shared link gets paywalled, or loaded with ads.
