Awesome thread. Thanks for sharing. This reminded me I had a Fisher Price portable vinyl player as a kid which was the best thing.

Do children need educating about dead languages? Do children need educating about politics that happened before they were even born? Do they need to know what a cloud really is? Will any of this help them in their work on the production lines?

More seriously, the basic principles are interesting and having a simple reference to explain them is handy. And they underlie all sorts of musical history. As well as being a good introduction to automation and how you can record information on physical artefacts for mechanical retrieval, leading into punch cards and the basics of computer science.
