Date: 2021-09-15 11:44 am (UTC)The nasal saline irrigation for COVID19 study makes a lot of sense -- simple mechanical cleaning of the infection site of entry. It obviously won't stop a systemic infection in progress so it's essential to start it immediately in event of a positive test (lateral flow or PCR). Don't rely on it to save you, and if you're not testing every 48 hours it may do no good at all, but it's a cheap and harmless measure that may help (unlike ivermectin, HCQ, and so on).
It really needs an urgent large-scale followup trial, but I'm pretty sure it won't get one because nobody in the US stands to make a profit off Nelimed Neti pots (think "plastic baby teapot and sachets of baking soda") and over here it's a labour-intensive intervention (unless you trust the public to do it themselves).

Date: 2021-09-15 12:03 pm (UTC)The worst thing that can happen is you accidentally snort brain-eating amoebas and die hideously over a period of months ... assuming you use un-boiled lake water from the wrong parts of the United States. Right.
Obviously be careful about what water you use, but Edinburgh tap water that's been through an ion exchange resin is (anecdotally) just fine: Feorag's been using a Neti pot for donkey's years to deal with congested sinuses.
(Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine are wonder drugs for their appropriate conditions -- filariasis and lupus respectively -- but absolutely not free of side-effects and shouldn't be used without medical supervision. Isotonic sodium bicarbonate in contrast is as near to harmless as you can get.)
