3) The ultimate example of slack in the sense this means it is firefighters - their job is to sit around doing absolutely nothing most of the time, so that they'll be ready to spring into action when needed.

5) I stopped eating fish sticks when they stopped putting fish inside. Now all there is is a thin strip of fish-flavored paste between thick layers of breading. They were quite different in my childhood.

1. That might solve the "blood diamond" problem. Maybe.

7. Good news, where Louisiana is concerned, yes. How do we stop the other states from going down the wrong road?

9. Reassuring, as far as it goes. Reading that article led me to this one:

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/space-junk-collision-satellite-debris-iss-nasa-b1074079.html

I guess we call this the "fear of the Gravity scenario problem"? It seems far more probable than the single-rocket-crashing scenario nowadays.

11. A marvel of further advancing communication by hieroglyphic text!

13. Good news there!

The KImberley Process is intended to keep diamonds from war-zones (the original "blood diamonds") out of the global rough diamond market.

It would be interesting to see what happens to the natural diamond market. It might be similar to what happened to the market for natural pearls after cultured pearls became common i.e. it would disappear. But natural pearls were always much more rare than natural diamonds, so the diamond market will probably segment. Lab-grown will become part of the high-end costume jewellery market, which is basically Pandora's price point, and possibly take over some of the mass market for real jewellery. Natural diamonds will be marketed as "the real thing", and remain a high-end luxury product. Something similar to the differentiation between untreated rubies and sapphires and treated ones.

That was interesting. I wasn't sure whether I should sign the petition, as I'm not a student or academic (although I study things in my spare time)
