With respect to burning iron - they do state that the combustion process only gets 40% of the energy back as electricity, which is near perfect Carnot efficiency, but still a big loss.

You are correct that there are more efficient competitors. Using the iron to make a battery would have a lot less motion and labour (making it much cheaper), would be easily scalable from home-use to grid-capacity, and would be over 90% efficient.

New Zealand's finally starting to do a proper test of its covid-card...
