Do you recall there being a shop in Rainham named ' 'Arrods'?

The official one got really stroppy and when they got a court decision in their favour, the shop renamed itself 'Not 'Arrods'. :o)

There was 'Billy Sollocks' in Strood, too!

Hydrogen in gas supply

It's definitely not "the first time" for hydrogen to be in in the gas supply -- time was domestic gas was made by converting coal into coke for iron and steel production. The gas produced was a mixture of carbon monoxide (which made it toxic to breathe) and hydrogen.

I still remember the big changeover to natural gas after the decline in coking operations as iron and steel production in Britain fell away. The Gas Board (as it was at the time) replaced the burners on our kitchen stove to cope with the different air/gas burning ratio needed.

Hydrogen is a problematic gas to work with -- it embrittles a lot of common steel alloys at room temperature and it is the escape artist of the Periodic Table, not surprising given H2 is the smallest molecule around.

They baked cookies in space AND DIDN'T GET TO EAT THEM??

I assume there's a good reason using electricity to electrolyse hydrogen for gas heating instead of sending it over the grid into electric fires. Maybe transmission losses? Or time-shifting? But I'm not sure, it would be nice to know.
