To say that plastics recycled as carpets, coats, bags, shoes and so on aren't being recycled is rather, shall we say, disingenuous............

I saw a TV programme the other day where an indigenous island fishing people were recycling beached plastic as fish lures- making crab lookalikes. Clever that! :o)

You do have a point. Given that the goal is to keep that plastic out of the landfills and oceans for as long as possible, every reuse we can devise will be helpful to varying degrees.

Exactly.

Our ancestors (even my granny) made rag mats to make use of old clothing and sacking and there are so many ways we can do similar- our neighbour has a garden mobile made of rags, wire and old computer discs f'rinstance and it looks stunning!

Stephanie Hofeller did a very good thing for the people of the USA. And, quite possibly, for the rest of the human race as well.

Where I used to live, supermarket plastic bags are normally recycled at home as garbage bags, since there is daily garbage collection. In this context, supermarkets charging for their plastic bags so that people will bring their own just leads people to buy dedicated plastic garbage bags, which are by definition single-use. Garbage is also incinerated for energy generation, so the issues of biodegradability, or landfill or ocean contamination do not arise either. It is very irritating when campaigners ignore local realities in favour of unthinkingly imposing one-size-fits-all, 'solutions' where it is both irrelevant and possibly actively counter-productive.

Re censorship: Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. There is no difference in principle between left and right (in the Anglosphere senses of the terms) when it comes to censorship. Once you accept "no-platforming" someone for their opinions, the only issue is who is the one silenced or punished for that opinion, and for what, and that is a pure matter of who has the power in that particular context.

That is a remarkably long-suffering cat.

Old CDs are reflective and therefore make handy cheap ba gua mirrors. Just draw in the eight sides and the trigrams with marker pen and hang up as many as you want over your doors and windows.
