I spent Christmas with an eighteen month old child. Who actually sang along to Baby Shark many, many times. Fuck knows.

I mean "just don't come in" is indeed a viable answer and I intend not to. But the idea that all device use is equal and rubbish is so poisonous

See also "screen time" which helpfully mashes up watching TV / watching YouTube / interacting with a game (educational or otherwise) / reading / listening to music / communicating with other people etc etc etc.

To me such signs say "not a pub for me" much as "football at 3pm Arsenal v Chelsea" or "LIVE punk band Tuesday" do. Cambridge has dozens of pubs, I don't feel sad that not every pub in Cambridge is welcoming to me (I'd feel different if I were in a 1-pub village I expect).

I do think it's a bit of a silly sign, would my book be OK but my kindle not? and why? but wevski, not a 'me' pub I'll go someplace else.

The book equivalency question occurred to me as well. I had a long commute on public transport to and from school for five years decades ago. I read books both ways. Lots of books. Were there ever coffee shops with a no book, no newspaper, no writing policy? How about a no Walkman policy?

While at one level I get the pub thing- like those which don't have TV's jukeboxes or one arm bandits, but at another level it seems a bit ott.

The pub we use in town is traditional even to brewing its own ale and distilling its own gin and doesn't have the things I mention, but the technology doesn't seem to interfere with a lot of conversation and interaction among the punters (and their dogs- it's also a doggy sort of place :o).

The video Sophia adores appears to be complete wish fulfillment with abrasive music, colorful candy baths with so many kinder eggs. It's like any YA novel into a short clip for kids under 12.

The video has primary colors that they are learning or already know (they love repeatability). A safe surprise! Other babies. High pitched noises ( most humans LOVE buttons and high pitched noises: Adele). Button shaped candy, And monkeys.

Also attractive for the very young: baby faces (on the dolls) and the zigzag motions of the manipulated objects. The happy baby noises might also elicit a mirrored response.

Some adults like bathing in all kind of weird and/or gross stuff. Sophia likes watching babies bathing in candy. She's the smart one. Babies: funny, candy: good, colors: nice and bright. (bath: fun time? depends how she feels about it.)

And now I want some M&M's. And for monkeys no to get hurt.

No-Tech Pubs and Coffeehouses? No Thanks!

There's a few places scattered around Ottawa-Gatineau trying to pull similar shenanigans - I am being charitable with my language choices here - and Sally is on target here for several reasons: disabled peoples' rights, emergency situations, vulnerable peoples' safety, job search availability requirements (this item is one I currently have to abide by), and so on. "Privilege" on the part of the proprietor is definitely an ongoing problem.
