He's the head of Orthodox Jews, but nor is the Archbishop of Canterbury head of all Christians here- however both are seen as speaking for all and to be saying what needs saying about social issues.

Amusing (I thought) tidbit: my mother is vaguely affiliated with an Orthodox synagogue, because her late husband was Orthodox. She mentioned that the Chief Rabbi, who used to be their rabbi, is, officially [whatever that means], the Chief Rabbi not of England, or even the United Kingdom, but of Great Britain and the Commonwealth. And this guy has apparently decided that this means he should visit every Commonwealth country and talk to the Jewish community there.

I don't know what the New Zealanders or Indians he talked to while visiting their countries thought of this, on the range from "good, talking to Jews from other countries" to "why must the English meddle in everything?"

And Boris Johnson is no better in his commentaries.
