Regarding the cost of light - anytime people talk about simple living, a desire to go "off the grid," return to "traditional lifestyles," etc., I am reminded that I twice gave birth between the hours of midnight and dawn, and I am VERY VERY HAPPY that we have cheap lighting now.

I have no idea how many deaths in or near childbirth were caused by "oops nobody noticed the extra bleeding because it was too dark" or "oops pregnant woman slipped and fell down during labor because nobody could see where she was walking and that turned out...badly." And I try not to think about surgery by candlelight.

Much as I love reading and am glad I can do so until midnight with our modern miracle of light at all hours, that's a very minor enhancement compared to the difference that good lighting has made in medical settings.

Having the Lib Dems as the Opposition for four years from 1997 to 2001 would have completely reshaped British politics, so the analysis of votes from 2001 onwards is inaccurate, since it doesn’t take that into account.
