This applies to so many things. So much of austerity, so much of what's rolled up under universal credit, is so awful, it's easy to forget that it wasn't like that. Like, it was never GENEROUS, perhaps, but having some kind of unemployment benefits and disability benefits where (at least for a lot of people, even if not always) were assumed to be "oh well, if you applied, you probably deserve it" rather than "fuck you, we'll lie about everything until you fight tooth and nail for a bare minimum", buoyed up a lot of things. Not exactly a universal basic income, but doing some of the same things, for some people. It's so tragic we dismantled what we already had, it's literally going backwards :(

How much is the Harry Potter franchise worth to the UK economy? How many dole payments does it (a) cover via tax revenue and (b) prevent by creating jobs?

Perhaps supporting that unemployed single mother was a good idea?
