I was at a party at the World Science Fiction Convention when someone rushed in and exclaimed that Princess Diana had been killed.

"Oh," we all said, and went back to what we were doing.

Which sounds pretty proportionate. I can see having a _bit_ more of a reaction. But the one which happened was just hysterical.

Practicing grief happens in public, around people who don't actually affect our lives. It's safe this way. There's an enormous support system, too.

My immediate reaction when Diana Spencer died was, "oh fuck, the TV and newspapers are going to be unbearable for the next couple of weeks".

I had no idea the UK was going to lose its collective shit: while it was in full cry I had a scary feeling that if I actually said what I felt in public I might be attacked by strangers. Hell, even noting publicly that the public discourse was unhealthily obsessive would have been dangerous.
