Absolutely, these trial employees should be paid. It was once my responsibility to hire college students for an inputting job. One of my employees asked me to hire her (non-student) friend. I called her in, took her information for HR purposes, and sat her down for training, at which point I learned that she could not type. She was there a total of an hour. She got paid for that hour.
